The short answer is “no.” The Farads, the wealthy family at the fore of the series, are fictional characters living amid real events. Co-created by Alejandro Aménabar and Alejandro Hernández, the latter explained how his life inspired what the series is about, telling Variety:

“I fought in Angola’s Civil War, starting in November 1988, returning in 1990 just as the Berlin Wall fell. I was 18, 19. These things mark you. I had always dreamt of saying something about one of these Cold War conflicts.”

And wow, he has a lot to say! The Amazon Prime series is filled with biting commentary on world events. As a cynic, “Los Farad” resonates as sharing one of history’s brutal truths. Nothing has changed on the world stage except the actors in the spotlight. The timeframe “Los Farad” covers is a central figure in the story. Dare I say a character in and of itself.

Similarly, to “Narcos,” Oskar narrates to give us personal and geo-political insight into what transpires. And while a lot of shows have discussed the human and drug trade’s inner workings, “Los Farad” is one of the few (aside from “Lord of War”) to dive into that *other* deadly business. Explaining how they chose it, series director Mariano Barroso told Variety:

“On one hand, arms trafficking had hardly featured in Spanish fiction, especially with the element of its being totally legal. Then there was the world of Marbella, and I’ve always wanted to make a family saga.”

This quote is nice to read as someone with a soft spot for any drama rooted in family dynamics. After all, when we break it down, that is what everyone has in common. We have a biological mother and father. What happens with that relationship is each individual’s unique companion story.

Whether it is Beth Dutton on “Yellowstone” or Cersei Lannister on “Game of Thrones” – family is a core element of their story. Their role in their respective families is their driving force. In “Los Farad,” Sara robustly represents that.

Oskar is the viewers’ vein into the surreal story that Sara is much more accustomed to navigating. If you watch your fair share of documentaries, you realize how big some people live their lives. Massive highs, lows, and stranger-than-fiction twists punctuate their lives.

While watching “Los Farad,” I repeatedly asked myself if the Farad family was real. Instead of Googling for the answer, I waited until finishing Season 1 to find out. The stakes felt even higher that way. The story had already been written and produced, and not knowing if “Los Farad” was a true story made it feel more vivid.

To the team behind the series’ credit, Season 1 feels plausible. “Los Farad” is a captivating rollercoaster ride that never coasts. It begins with an ending – Oskar wading into a pool with a shell-shocked expression and a “Magnum P.I.” era mustache. Miguel Herrán’s arresting countenance as he enters the water really hooks you.

If I recall correctly, “Los Farad” only shows the beginning/ending scene once. And yet, it hangs over Season 1 like a looming cloud. What does it mean? How will all of this end? Without a true story to constrain its conclusions, “Los Farad” can give itself lots of leeway.

To its credit, how well-written the narration is that seals every moment with authenticity and a dread of what is to come. Did this happen in real life? Season 1’s ending also allows viewers to imagine what would occur in a potential Season 2 without making one essential. If “Los Farad” was a true story, it seems doubtful it would end with any hope.

To Recap: “Los Farad” is not based on a true story in the sense that the characters/families that are portrayed exist/existed. The geo-political atmosphere that the Farads maneuver is based on reality.

FYI: If you struggle to read subtitles due to vertigo or reading fatigue, “Los Farad” is excellently dubbed in English. The voice actors have come a *long* way in the past few years.
Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-22598279274835797982024-02-19T09:46:00.000-05:002024-02-19T09:46:22.517-05:00Why 'Lover, Stalker, Killer' on Netflix is So Frustrating

Netflix

Netflix is back with another true crime documentary, “Lover, Stalker, Killer.” If you regularly watch “Dateline,” you will probably feel familiar with this case. It is tough to beat Keith Morrison’s silky narration and comprehensive coverage in Season 26, Episode 1. Nevertheless, “Lover, Stalker, Killer” gives viewers a compelling take on the frustrating events.

And there is one startling thing that this documentary (incidentally?) brings to Netflix subscribers’ attention. How obvious this case’s conclusion is. It only takes hearing about it for five minutes. The police work was anything except thorough. At least, that is the impression you quickly get watching “Lover, Stalker, Killer.”

The setup is simple, and what is scary is how Dave’s story could be anyone’s. Wait, who is Dave? When the doc opens, Dave is a single father trying to casually date women when he meets a single mom, Liz. He does not want a formal relationship and ends things with her. Then it happens.

Right when you give up on love (in Dave’s case, casual sex), you meet someone. Or at least that is the adage that I have heard tossed around. Back to Dave, though, he is at work when he meets Cari Farver. She’s also a single mom, and Dave is quickly smitten.

Long story short. “Lover, Stalker, Killer” explains that they hook up and are together for two weeks when Cari abruptly texts him about moving in together. Dave is uninterested in commitment and is thrown for a loop by the bizarre proposal. Before long, the texts turn sinister and creepy before launching into full-blown stalker mode.

The initial police work “Lover, Stalker, Killer” chronicles is striking. Thankfully, another (diligent) team stepped in, and amassed a very good picture of what happened. That this investigation went cold and lasted four years instead of four minutes is shocking. It is an indictment of many issues regarding law enforcement.

Entertainment (movies, TV, podcasts, etc.) does a lot of heavy lifting to convince people the police (correctly) solve cases, and they do it quickly. To its credit, while Keith Morrison always catches the killer by the episode’s end, he reminds us how long victims’ families wait for answers. In the case featured by “Lover, Stalker, Killer,” it took way (emphasis on way) too long, in my opinion.

Proving a legal case requires an evidentiary bar, and there are often limitations. The DA agreeing to charges takes a lot. Sometimes more than the case should require (opinion again). The police figuring out a key fact is another thing entirely. It was self-evident.

Similar case: no one saw/heard rain, and a large swath of land is soaked. What happened? Spoiler alert: it rained. It is alarming to notice how differing the levels of police work are in “Lover, Stalker, Killer.” Similarly shocking is that the documentary leaves so much unsaid.

Did the IT guy get his tumor successfully removed? Is Dave still on dating sites/apps? How is everyone affected by these crimes currently doing? “Lover, Stalker, Killer” is excellent if you are a Netflix describe who does not know or remember the case. If you watched “Dateline,” I would wait a while before watching it.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-85662189805284722552024-01-21T11:09:00.001-05:002024-02-19T17:14:12.762-05:00Is 'Los Farad' on Amazon Prime Worth Watching?

Prime Video

In cinematic terms, “Los Farad” is “The Wolf of Wall Street” meets “Lord of War.” The Amazon Prime series is a fast-paced, first-person tale of intrigue, gloss, glitz, utter mayhem, and a little madness. “Money Heist” star Miguel Herrán plays Oskar, an ambitious aerobics instructor living it up in the crazy eighties.

Okay. Oskar thinks he is living it up in Madrid when a twist of fate puts him in the crosshairs of an equally ambitious woman: Sara Farad (Susana Abaitua). What seems to be a one-and-done encounter turns into something more. Sara introduces Oskar to her family (the Farads) in Marbella, who readily accepts him.

A storybook romance could end there, except “Los Farad” is about much more than its boy-meets-dream-girl dynamics. Oskar learns his “new family” are international weapons dealers. Yep. In response, Oskar embraces the family business, diving headfirst into the fray. Casablanc’s charisma sells Oskar and the audience on the believability of such an audacious premise.

Whether in crime or usual family mode, “Los Farad” keeps viewers glued to their seats. You cannot grow bored when you take that staycation by watching Spanish movies and TV shows. The cast never appears weary of the material, either.

The entire ensemble shines in this fast-paced thriller. Watching Netflix’s latest foreign hit, “Detective Forst,” had many strong moments, only to be unraveled. The Polish dramatic thriller focuses on its title character, Wiktor Forst (Borys Szyc), as he relentlessly pursues a vicious serial killer in his small town.

Season 1 comprises six episodes that steadily (if slowly) invest you in the townspeople and, more quickly, justice for the so-called “Monster of Giewont.” To say that Detective Forst is consumed in his avid investigation would be putting it mildly. He is obsessed, and as he digs deeper, related truths surface, leading to a startling conclusion.

Mild spoilers for the ending of “Detective Forst” Season 1 below.

All of this sounds pretty interesting, so why on earth do I regret watching “Detective Forst” on Netflix? It is simple. Season 1 ends on an enormous, giant cliffhanger. You read correctly. You spent roughly 6 hours of your life on Detective Forst’s intense investigation, and you do not get a proper ending.

Netflix has become increasingly comfortable allowing its series to end on a cliffhanger. It is a chance to make a case for a hypothetical Season 2. There is one major problem. Do you know what else Netflix has gotten comfortable with? Cancelling shows. Netflix cancelled “The OA” after a mega-trippy Season 2 cliffhanger.

Creatives must realize that audience satisfaction is equally important to creating hope for a second season. If you think that there is no way “Detective Forst,” one of the most popular shows on Netflix, according to their own Top 10 – think again.

Belgium’s supernatural hit “Black Spot” ended with a cliffhanger and has not returned for a third season. Season 2 premiered in 2019, so do not hold your breath. Meanwhile, Spain’s “The Longest Night” has not unleashed Season 2 on Netflix, despite ending with no resolutions. It came out in 2022. What. A. Waste.

This viewer wants to watch a show with a beginning and middle and hopes for it not to end. For now, we all must wait with bated breath to learn if “Detective Forst” gets to wrap up properly. Netflix has fittingly (considering the location setting) frozen us in time and with excitement.
Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-49343743171466298942023-10-23T08:30:00.010-04:002023-10-23T11:35:39.224-04:00'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour' Review: Should You See It?

AMC Theatres, Taylor Swift Productions

Lights, camera, Swift-- Taylor Swift. What is better than seeing the music superstar in concert? Seeing Taylor Swift dominate the stage in a concert movie. In “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” Swift gives movie-goers a front-row seat to the tour of the year and possibly the decade.

As explained here, I have gone to two Taylor Swift concerts in person. The first was the “Fearless” tour, and the second was “Speak Now.” Both shows were amazing and featured a twenty-something Swift getting a whole coliseum on their feet. That was then, and this is the glorious now. In her concert movie, Swift goes through every “Era” of her career, and she does not miss a beat.

Taylor Swift is a “Mastermind,” and it shows.

You see, Swift is one of the few entertainers to gain energy instead of seeing hers diminish as a concert progresses. I have seen other performers give their all in the opening acts and lose momentum as their energy wanes. Their ability to gain more from the crowd is not possible. For Taylor Swift, the audience energizes her superpowers. Swift sings, performs, and lives her songs to a stunning level.

As a fan since “Tim McGraw” hit radio airwaves in its first week in rotation, it has been a privilege to watch Taylor Swift become a household name. Suppose you have never heard one of her songs. Or seen one of Swift’s music videos or her enlightening documentary, never fear.

Watching five seconds of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” should make you a fan for life.

If you have been to a Taylor Swift concert in the past, you know you spend most of your time watching jumbotron screens to see her. The movie gives you a chance to skip that and get up close as Swift gives one of the many performances of her life. It is safe to say that with her raw gift, she has only improved with time.

It is abundantly evident that Taylor Swift has worked to perfect every detail of her “Fearless” dance moves. Even how she holds her microphone has been finessed, and Swift keeps her balletic energy flowing through every dance move, down to her fingertips. There is not a second that Swift is not in a “State of Grace” on stage.

For long-time fans, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is a must-see walk down memory lane. Every era means something different to Swift and her fans. For me, it is a trail of broken dreams, grievous betrayals, fractured fantasies, and the dawning of new hope.

After so many bad memories, it felt great to make new ones.

My Mom, Chewy the Pomeranian, and I went to a drive-in to watch Taylor Swift rock the socks off of Inglewood, California. It was the best spot to see it, under the big sky, it was easy to feel like you were in the crowd. No matter where you decide to see it, ensure you do. You will want to experience this era.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is currently in theaters.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-46079653843075211352023-10-13T15:15:00.001-04:002023-10-14T11:53:13.701-04:00'Pact of Silence' Review: Is It Worth Watching on Netflix?

Netflix

Netflix knew what I needed this fall – a sudsy drama! This one has arrived in the form of Mexico’s “Pact of Silence” (“Pacto de Silencio”). In the premiere, viewers get everything: secrets, lies, mysteries, and vendettas. It all begins with four best friends running in a rainstorm while carrying a bundle.

If you guessed that bundle is a baby, congratulations. For mysterious reasons, the quad leaves the baby in a shack, and she is summarily adopted by a lady living nearby. Now, she wants payback. Brenda (Camila Valero), that baby-turned-woman, drives the core mystery of “Pact of Silence.” A successful influencer, Brenda, wants to identify her mother and get revenge.

One of the young girls running through the rainstorm is Brenda’s mother. Now grown up themselves, the four friends have maintained their relationship and “Pact of Silence.” Is that about to change? Brenda is determined to make it.

Writing on the Wall

The premiere has two moments where this entire mystery could be solved in two seconds. Brenda could covertly secure a DNA test from her suspected mothers. “Pact of Silence” lets that go without even acknowledging the possibility. All Brenda needs is a hair from each woman.

Of course, we would not have a show if Brenda procured DNA test materials. It is the elephant in the room that the drama keeps a “Pact of Silence” around. If you share this Netflix subscriber’s love of big drama, “Pact of Silence” is the perfect binge-watch.

The series shares elements of 2021’s “The Five Juanas,” a thoroughly enjoyable Netflix series about five women who learn they are all half-sisters. Of course, those with storied TV memories will probably recall similarities between “Pact of Silence” and the 1984 miniseries “Lace” starring Phoebe Cates.

For those of us who loved “Triptych” earlier this year, “Pact of Silence” is the perfect companion piece. A woman’s search for her mysterious origins is central to both Netflix series. After “Fake Profile” steamed up summer, it is up to “Pact of Silence” to help warm up the fall. So far, it is more than doing its job.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-67269782697329865812023-10-10T13:24:00.003-04:002023-10-14T11:53:29.948-04:00Is Phoebe Dynevor's 'Fair Play' Netflix's Best 2023 Movie?

Netflix

Powerful and provocative turnabout is undoubtedly “Fair Play” in writer/director Chloe Domont’s searing psychological thriller on Netflix. A promotion marks the turning point for a young couple living, loving, and working together in the ruthless world of a hedge fund.

When “Fair Play” begins, Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) are a pair of professionals in messy, blissful love with one another. Hot on the heels of their engagement, their work life gets a jolt when Emily overhears mumblings that Luke has been tapped for a promotion to PM.

Prioritizing her supportive fiancé hat before her professional priorities, Emily makes the mistake of telling Luke what she has heard. Luke is thrilled. There is only one problem. Luke has not earned any such promotion -- Emily has. Thus, setting the stage for “A Star is Born” style wrinkle.

What follows is a tightly woven, suspensefully told story. Netflix’s “Fair Play” conveys so many personal frustrations in one fell swoop that it almost left this viewer giddy with glee. The excuses that failures make for why they fail. (It is never their fault.) How narcissists operate when they feel threatened by the truth of their capabilities. (Scary, angry.)

It is all here.

Life with a narcissist can be hard to spot. As the word gets thrown around with little restraint these days, people may need a refresher on its intended targets. Watching “Fair Play” gives a more than fair look into the twisted reality they often hide inside. They must work overtime to protect a fragile truth their carefully constructed ego aims to protect at all costs.

They do not have what it takes to succeed, and they know it. As “Fair Play” so dutifully illustrates, narcissists are at their most dangerous when backed into the corner of exposure. Writer/director Chloe Domont’s dialogue-laden script is brilliant, sharp, and worth watching the film twice to catch again.

In a year of average movies, “Fair Play” marks one of the year’s first English-language films to be great. Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, and Eddie Marsan all turn in riveting performances that fit like a power broker’s suit. Even with a custom fit, they find room to breathe with nuanced micro-moments that tell a story without words.

If Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, and Chloe Domont are ignored this awards season, it will just be further proof of how out of touch those “contests” are.

This is not only an engaging Netflix movie. It is important. The political undercurrent of a male/female relationship is finally splayed out in an informative, messy way that does not miss a beat. At its core, though, is what that relationship looks like when one party is a raging narcissist, and “Fair Play” nails it.

“Fair Play” is currently streaming on Netflix.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-26737010511415931472023-08-30T12:55:00.003-04:002023-10-14T11:53:40.202-04:00'Who is Erin Carter?' on Netflix: Is the Hit Worth Watching?

Netflix

“Who is Erin Carter?” asks Netflix in this new limited series set in Barcelona, Spain. After all, “The Blacklist” finished without directly answering the riddle of Raymond Reddington’s identity.

Netflix’s complicated mystery drama answers the titular question of who Erin Carter is in Episode 4. That is the only semi-spoiler you will get in this review, so let’s get back to the beginning. “Who is Erin Carter?” opens with Erin (Evin Ahmad) watching the minutes tick by before 5 a.m. arrives. In her arms is her daughter, Harper.

Time Jump

Fast forward five years, and Erin has not aged a day, while Harper presents as an angry tween. Whatever viewers question about Erin Carter’s identity, one thing is obvious. Erin is willfully clueless about Harper’s violent streak, profoundly disrespectful behavior, and bizarre secret-keeping. Harper needs a therapist, according to her out-of-the-loop yet caring stepdad, Jordi (Sean Teale, “Reign”).

Her father is correct. Sadly, his thoughts and feelings are not given much thought throughout the early episodes of the miniseries. Will that ever change? You must watch “Who is Erin Carter?” to learn the answer as clues come in left and right. Despite a premise that hints at the tenacious bite of “A History of Violence,” this Netflix series is less thematically meaty.

Empathy: Party of One?

Neither Harper nor her mother beget much easy empathy. Harper is another rude TV kid needing an attitude adjustment—Erin’s constant denials of that obvious truth test one’s patience beyond all self-respect. “A Long Kiss Goodnight”—“Who is Erin Carter?” most definitely is not, which is understandable and frustrating.

Spain has released so much in the way of engaging thrillers and marvelous mysteries in recent years alone. Hence, “Who is Erin Carter?” inherits expectations from its location choice. During its highs, it grows close to meeting them. The momentum picks up as it nears the halfway point and continues building on its shoulders.

Is Erin Carter Immortal?

The downside is that the Netflix original puts Erin in too many precarious situations to imagine she could survive all of them. Not even Joe Goldberg has tested mortality and easily won with as much vigor as Erin Carter, whose superhuman strength is simply ridiculous. That said, Evin Ahmed is fantastic in the lead role, displaying an iron will and a kind heart to make Erin believable on a human level.

“Who is Erin Carter?” also delivers on the supporting cast and stunt front. The main issue is the believability of its main character’s constant dance with near-death. Seven episodes prove a fair allotment to tell a captivating story that grows and flows with suspense—plot holes be darned! All told, an entertaining way to beat the heat of summer’s final days.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-42664554528537209532023-08-30T12:51:00.003-04:002023-08-31T12:56:02.155-04:00Is 'Depp v. Heard.” It topped the charts of Netflix’s most-watched list upon its release and is still in the top ten. But is it accurate? “Depp v. Heard” is a sore subject for the mainstream media.
Since the saga began,Insider, The Hill, and beyond have come out in droves to proclaim the jury and the public got it wrong. That is a nearly impossible sell, considering that people had an opportunity to watch the Depp v. Heard trial sans mainstream media’s influence. There was no ability to bend the truth, and when the media is blocked from its favorite pastime, it tries the second-best thing:

Rewrite History.

Thank goodness for the live stream. Without it, “Depp v. Heard” viewers could not know the truth. Let the trial speak for itself. Regardless, the media wants to remind you about the UK trial, where the media successfully controlled the narrative thanks to the proceedings not being televised. And who does not want trials live-streamed? People who clearly have *nothing* to hide. Not.

Now that “Depp v. Heard” has premiered, the media has lamented contemporaneous headlines and the internet’s reaction to the trial. There is no objectivity in any piece. There is no acknowledgment of the obvious facts presented in court that clearly indicate the truth and eventual verdict.

When You Fail, Keep Failing

The media claimed that Johnny Depp could never succeed when the Depp v. Heard trial began, just read Variety. When that failed, they went into damage control mode and have been in it ever since. They have been fighting for Amber Heard and will never stop.

When Amber Heard’s (mostly) failed case was announced, the mainstream media (except Law & Crime) mourned with waves of headlines that were actually disturbing. Why Heard won any claim is impossible for me to understand. Now it is time for Netflix’s “Depp v. Heard” docuseries to “make sense of it.”

To Tell the Truth

The war between the mainstream media’s control over any story’s narrative is at the heart of “Depp v. Heard” or any other documentary. To hear them tell it, everything viewers and real-time for themselves in real-time does not matter. According to the media, only they can possess “the truth,” and it is Amber Heard’s all the way to the bank.

Whether or not “Depp v. Heard” is slanted (my guess is yes), yours truly does not plan to watch it. Having watched the trial, I do not need Netflix’s “Depp v. Heard” to carefully pick clips that skew reality. I have watched the media work on that for the last year, to the point I have avoided all articles about the case.

Of course, if I have more to say, I will leave that to the Eclectic Pop-Cast to share. Do you plan to watch Netflix’s “recap” of “Depp v. Heard”? Or have you heard enough of the mainstream media’s garbage? Is that a thing? Yes, you simply press the fast-forward button until you see Alia Bhatt. The mega-talented actress stars in the Netflix spy thriller as the central antagonist to Gal Gadot’s Rachel Stone.

Mild spoilers for Netflix’s “Heart of Stone” are scattered below.

You would think that would give Alia Bhatt a lot of screen time. Without timing it, it is tough to say how much screentime Bhatt receives, although it does not feel like the amount worthy of her talent. The good news is that how “Heart of Stone” handles her character allows Bhatt to return in a potential sequel. Or, more favorably, one would hope she would reprise the role in a stand-alone spinoff.

Netflix should know what they have in Alia Bhatt. Bhatt is a global mega (mega) star whose career only continues to grow more impressive by the year. “Heart of Stone” is Bhatt’s first Hollywood film, and if executives are not living under a rock, it should be the first of many.

Upon seeing Bhatt in Netflix’s 2022 drama, “Darlings,” I was blown away by her talent, and she is now a household name in our family. Alia Bhatt could have been the solo star of “Heart of Stone.” With what she is given, Bhatt succeeds. As usual, Alia Bhatt turns in a scene-stealing performance as Keya Dhawan, the cyber genius trying to get an all-powerful weapon.

That weapon is called the Heart. Hence, the title -- “Heart of Stone.” Throughout the movie, there is an intriguing dynamic played between Keya and Gal Gadot’s Rachel. When they finally meet in person, the film excels quite a bit. Sadly, this interaction primarily takes place toward the climax of the Netflix movie.

While I did not watch “Heart of Stone” in its entirety, I did watch the highlights starring -- Alia Bhatt. Did you watch the Netflix spy thriller? What did you think of Alia Bhatt’s screen time? Would you like to see her reprise her role in a solo vehicle?

“Heart of Stone” Viewers Will Also Like:

- “Gangubai Kathiawadi” to see Alia Bhatt’s Oscar-worthy performance as the fierce title character. The gripping biopic is streaming on Netflix.

- For more action, check out “The Grey Man” starring Ryan Gosling in a role very different from Ken in “Barbie.” The 2022 movie co-starring Ana de Armas was one of the best of the year. Streaming on Netflix.

- “Darlings” is another Alia Bhatt starrer worth watching. It tackles domestic violence and the path victims take toward realizing their situation. You are lucky! This drama is also streaming on Netflix.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-73447818738777403472023-08-24T11:03:00.001-04:002023-08-31T13:07:38.489-04:00Hi! Thank you so much for coming back here. (Unfortunately, I have not seen the “Barbie” movie yet.) Yes, even though I have been gone long enough for the movie to gross over $1 billion, per WSJ. If it is any consolation, “Barbie” coverage (doll and movie) has been a major bright spot during my time away.

Some of that coverage included YouTuber -- HopeScope -- providing epic nostalgia by opening discontinued Barbies. She also opened up all of the Barbie Dreamhouses. You are probably dying to know which one my sister and I got. For Christmas, we got the 1999 Dreamhouse. Ours is white (not pink), and it is still immaculate. 💗

But I digress.

Normally, yours truly comes back from a considerable break without acknowledging it. This time too much has changed to ignore this unplanned sabbatical. First of all, Eclectic Pop has a brand new look. Thank you, LoveLogicDesign! 🎉

Secondly, there is going to be new content forthcoming. It may be shorter (or longer) – whatever the material needs. Hopefully, that sounds appealing.

As for why I have been gone for so long. The new look took a lot of time, but that was not the only thing I worked on during the “break.” Eclectic Pop’s mascot – Chewy the Pom – needed his site redone, his YouTube further developed, and his Merch store refreshed and replenished.

Eclectic Pop is no longer my solo online presence, and the others require attention. Plus, doing YouTube is no joke, and Eclectic Pop’s channel continues to receive effort. While I used a pre-designed template for Eclectic Pop, everything you see is populated with, and the content is written by one person – me.

That includes Eclectic Pop’s YouTube channel, social media presence, Chewy’s site (YouTube, etc.), and when I find time, I put something up on my personal blog. All of this, being a solo effort, may change someday.

If it does, you will know.

Of course, handling all of this can be draining, and it leads to me needing breaks. Do I wonder if I could do more if I did not have fibromyalgia and all that comes with it? Absolutely. Do I think about getting help? Yes, and if I could afford it, I would.

It is a little wild to imagine all of that.

Instead of floating back into your inbox, I wanted to be more real with you. Perhaps, Carrie and company are having some effect on me. Some things have changed, and others have stayed the same. Relatively fresh from the -- HBO Max to Max -- transformation, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte have returned relatively unscathed.

For the most part, everyone is where we left them. “And Just Like That…” Season 2 picks up three weeks after the Season 1 finale that witnessed Carrie part ways with Big’s ashes in Paris. Carrie’s life continues to endure one quick change after another, while Charlotte continues to multi-task her frenetic world. Meanwhile, on the west coast, Miranda is living her best life in Los Angeles with Che.

Three episodes into Season 2 and the trio’s new friends are also wading into their next chapters with timid exuberance. Nya, Seema, Lisa, and Che are fascinating additions to the “Sex and the City” universe. I love them. Overall, “And Just Like That…” has yet to make a profoundly sore move despite critical claims to the contrary.

Oh, and a Pomeranian helped Seema find something precious!

Carrie’s galling decision to part ways with the uber-lovable Franklin is the only thing that confounds. Perhaps, he was too perfect of a catch at this point in Carrie’s grief journey? Carrie, like Seema, seems to be avoiding a true shot at love. Speaking of Seema, her BS detector is everything. Love lives aside, “And Just Like That…” is a refreshing break from this viewer’s rather mundane reality.

There is something so cozy about the Max series. It is like being cold and covering up with a heated blanket – instant relief. Could I go for being able to binge-watch Season 2? Yes. Is that a deal-breaker? Absolutely not. Having given myself a bit of a gap between when “And Just Like That…” returned and I began watching Season 2, there is a sense of a makeshift binge.

So far, Season 2 has provided moments of laughter, introspection, and fun fashion. “Sex and the City” and its costume design are synonymous. Would it be nice if someone were allowed to wear flats exclusively? Sure. Would Carrie Bradshaw allow it? We both know the answer to that. “And Just Like That…” yours truly is already eagerly awaiting a Season 3 renewal.

“And Just Like That…” Viewers Will Also Like:

- “Gossip Girl” 🌃 for the wannabe younger years 🎒 of “Sex and the City” 🗽 (streaming on Max)

- “The Tailor” 💘 for more romance, drama, and fashion 👗

- “Miss Americana” 👑 for New York vibes 🗽 with another stylish lead
Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-83235410538235393422023-06-30T12:42:00.001-04:002023-10-14T11:56:41.264-04:00Movie Review: 'The Man from Rome' Starring Richard Armitage

Courtesy Screen Media

Now in theaters and available on demand, “The Man from Rome” spins a web of intrigue amid cloistered politics. Richard Armitage (“Obsession”) stars in this dramatic caper as Father Quart, a priest and investigator for the Catholic Church with his own mysterious past. Fresh off a tragedy, Quart is tasked with investigating a hacker’s ominous message to the Pope.

Quart’s mission takes him to Seville, Spain, and plunges him into an escalating conflict involving an old church and much more. In a personal aspect of his odyssey, Quart develops a bond with the enigmatic Macarena Bruner (Amaia Salamanca, “Gran Hotel”). Macarena’s family owns the church at the heart of the battle with the Vatican.

Add in her manipulative ex-husband, and another spicy ingredient is added to an already robust recipe.

The tentacles of “The Man from Rome” and the ever-expanding conspiracy at the center of it go deep. For those who have watched the 2022 docuseries “The Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi,” none of the movie’s suggestions will be shocking.

What “The Man from Rome” intimates is a story that strikes with more authenticity than many might have guessed in 1995. That is when the movie’s source material, Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s novel “The Seville Communion,” was first published. Before and since then, a lot has happened in front of (and undoubtedly behind) the Vatican’s closed doors.

Truth Meets Fiction

To its credit, “The Man from Rome” script touches on the numerous modern scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church. There is no stone left unturned. There are many moving pieces and beautiful locales, and its dialogue proves critical in unraveling the mystery. It warrants two viewings to keep track of it all.

At 1 hour and 40 minutes, director Sergio Dow has to breeze through numerous blind alleys and informative passageways in search of the truth. Richard Armitage’s screen presence helps usher viewers along on Quart’s journey as it ebbs and flows. Considering the weight of the mystery, it is tricky for the characters to receive as much dynamism as they deserve.

The Cast

Richard Armitage and Amaia Salamanca lift their characters off the page as best as possible. Once you learn more about Quart and Macarena -- Armitage and Salamanca, let their soulful colors seep into view. Both actors are excellent choices to lead the film, and seeing them work opposite each other is fun.

From the Medici to the Borgias, non-fiction to fiction, there has been no end to viewers’ fascination with the inner machinations of the Roman Catholic Church. “The Man from Rome” provides another intriguing chapter that will hopefully inspire those watching to dig deeper into what they learn. Watch the sneak peek below and see if you agree before reading my take afterward.

First, the best song in the “Barbie” trailer is Mama Cass’s “Make Your Own Music.” Now to the missing pieces in this Barbie box. Where are Skipper, Stacie, and Kelly? Where is Barbie’s impressive wardrobe? Why does she feel nothing for Ken (or the Kens)? This Barbie fan will be waiting for the movie and a full synopsis to watch.

Whatever the story turns out to be, Cher Horowitz (“Clueless”) and Elle Woods (“Legally Blonde”) beat the “Barbie” movie to the punch, toying with the Barbie motif. Or, more correctly, the Barbie stereotype despite her ever-expanding career achievements. Cher and Elle equal popular “dumb blonde” with a gaggle of friends, a top-tier wardrobe, and to whom there is more than meets the eye.

Elle and Cher’s non-plastic shoes may be hard to fill.

For some of us, this “Barbie” movie has a lot riding on it. The live-action film is a long-time coming. You see, Barbie was more than a doll when I was growing up. She was a way of life, a chance to escape into another reality. Unlike today’s screen-obsessed children, my sister and I played with Barbies constantly. Barbie transported us to Dream House dream worlds where anything was possible.

In it, we controlled “world-building” our vision for Barbie’s life. We handled her love life with Ken (there was drama!), struggles with work-life balance (Ken wanted her home more), and navigating challenging family dynamics (raising her little sisters). The “Barbie” movie trailer looks ready to address none of that in the feature-length film.

Does Hollywood know how long this Barbie fan has waited for a movie?

Specifically, a live-action movie that would properly cover Barbie and the world conjured by Mattel. As a fan of Greta Gerwig’s past work, she deserves the benefit of the doubt regarding her “Barbie” script. That said, there is a sinking suspicion that the Oscar-nominated director could have made a campy “mainstream” Barbie movie.

The “Barbie” movie trailer does not mention Barbie’s little sisters -- Skipper, Stacie, and Kelly. Where is the recognition of Barbie’s mythology? Yes, there are a ton of Barbies and Kens. But what about Barbie’s friends? Theresa and Midge, to name a few. While the teasers does not show or acknowledge them, Midge and Allan are at least confirmed. Where are the other characters, though?

Barbie’s sisters are a huge part of her story. The curious absence of the Roberts family is a huge question mark that could have been explored. Of course, this suggests that the “Barbie” movie would take Barbie’s story seriously. This does not appear to be the case in the trailer.

Final Thoughts

The truth is the best “Barbie” movie has already been made. It is “Life-Size” with Tyra Banks and Lindsey Lohan. The storyline had fun with the idea of a doll coming to life and how she would handle living in the real world. That made-for-TV movie was nothing short of brilliant. The case of the “Barbie” movie remains to be seen.

I had hoped for a take on Barbie similar to the interpretation of “Elf” on Santa Claus and that whole mythos. That does not appear to be the “Barbie” movie’s direction. Of course, I am excited to see the talented Margot Robbie play Barbie. Ever since seeing her in “Pan Am,” I thought she could bring the beloved doll to life. At least that dream has come true. The other parts may not be included.

The “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie arrives in theaters (and only theaters) on July 21.
Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-52289363365049854362023-06-09T19:48:00.007-04:002023-10-14T11:56:53.237-04:00Is Kaley Cuoco's 'Based on a True Story' Your Next TV Binge?

Peacock

I have a confession to make, “Based on a True Story” caught my attention while perusing Peacock for…true crime content. Yes, I am in that club. The one that Kaley Cuoco’s Ava is a not-so-quiet member of, the true crime followers club. Upon seeing the trailer last week, it became clear that this Peacock original TV series was made for those of like minds.

The TV series is a clever mix of dark comedy and drama with suspenseful edges and angles thrown in alongside some measured bits of satire. “Based on a True Story” has an unusual vibe that this viewer deeply appreciates. It is not exactly positive toward true crime viewers. Albeit, the series also knows they will be the ones watching this, so they tread somewhat lightly.

“Based on a True Story” follows Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan Bartlett (Chris Messina) – a married couple expecting a baby during an ever-growing financial crisis. Ava is a realtor with no sales, and Nathan is a former tennis star who gets demoted by the club he has coached at for 20 years. When it rains, it pours until something comes in from the storm.

Matt, an uber-nice plumber (Tom Bateman), enters their lives. If only his story were to end there. As an avid true crime follower, Ava begins to suspect the unexpected about the nice guy/godsend plumber. It is a shame that the “Based on a True Story” trailer gives away the twist. Although it did get me so excited about the series, I have been counting the days until its release.

Mixed blessing? If you dare, the trailer is right here:

The first episode met considerable expectations, which were high coming into the “Based on a True Story” premiere. The cast is superb, and Kaley Cuoco is especially remarkable as Ava. Cuoco hits every comic note precisely and the show’s dramatic moments with finesse. Not since Jennifer Aniston has an actress zeroed in on being simultaneously relatable and larger than life.

Chris Messina and Tom Bateman also hit the right spot in their more-than-meets-the-eye everyman roles. I am not trying to oversell it, but “Based on a True Story” starts with tremendous promise. A character-driven series that calls upon the lighter hues of “Ozark” (they share executive producers) and the recent true crime craze, “Based on a True Story,” is ambitious. Brace yourself to have it all explained. For those of you who are curious as to what happened on the wild TV remake of the 1988 film, Eclectic Pop has you covered. The finale episode of the miniseries ties its various strings together to hit one last striking note.

In the Amazon series’ reimagining, identical twins and OBGYNs - Beverly and Elliot (Rachel Weisz) Mantle – are working to change how women give birth. By the end of “Dead Ringers,” it has come at a mighty steep price. Beverly is pregnant with twins soaking up the outside world, while Elliot is deep in the bowels of their new center.

The Series Ending, Explained

Beverly goes to Elliot in the final episode, and the two share a tender moment. Quickly wrapped up in their uniquely shared world, Beverly and Elliot’s “Dead Ringers” banter quickly turns dark. Beverly reveals that she is incapable of happiness no matter how hard she tries to capture and hold onto it. She is ready to “separate” from Elliot.

Related: Is “El Internado: Las Cumbres” a Scary Stellar 2-Season Binge?

With that -- Elliot and Beverly -- in what seems to be a folie à deux of sorts, head into the operating room. Elliot slashes her own abdomen to mimic a C-section incision and stitches up her wound. Still focused, Elliot performs a cesarean on Beverly, delivering her twins. Beverly dies moments later due to blood loss. Not missing a beat, Elliot emerges inside the clinic, holding the babies, assuming the identity of Beverly.

Final Scenes, Explained

Elliot may have convinced most people that she is Beverly, but Rebecca Parker remains skeptical of the story “Beverly” is selling. Whatever her suspicions, nothing can stand in Elliot’s way as Rebecca flashes an all-knowing grin in her direction.

Related: “Absentia” Season 3 Ending: How the Series Ends, Explained

Following a brief spate of credits, “Dead Ringers” continues with an after-credits scene that picks up in what appears to be Central Park. A dazed Elliot is sitting on a bench next to the babies. Genevieve is nearby picking up drinks. Snapping Elliot out of her fog is a woman who is a stranger to Elliot yet a familiar face to “Beverly.” And wow, is Elliot in for a shock.

After-Credits Scene, Explained

The woman’s relationship with Beverly quickly becomes clear. She is from Beverly’s bereavement group, where she talked about her twin’s death at the end of the first episode. Further stunning Elliot, she learns that Beverly had been going to the group for years. Elliot cannot hide the shock from her face. By the end of the conversation, she gives into a burst of maniacal laughter.

Related: Amazon Prime Is Giving “Gran Hotel” Fans a Limited-Time Treat

As Genevieve arrives, Elliot quickly recovers her senses and shoos the woman away. Genevieve asks after the woman, and Elliot says, “Oh, I don’t know. She thought I was my sister.” The remark leaves Genevieve looking uncomfortable. Viewers are then transported to Elliot in a support group, being asked if she wants to talk about her sister. A pensive Elliot begins to speak, and “Dead Ringers” cuts to black.

1988 Movie Ending vs. TV Ending

The “Dead Ringers” movie and the TV show have starkly different endings. In the film, both twins die after the “separation” procedure. In the TV show, Beverly dies, and Elliot lives. The latter proceeds to live her life as Beverly. To the outside world, the Mantles’ empire continues to breathe. Thus, leaving the door open to revisit the story with a potential Season 2.

In contrast, the 1988 movie ends with the Mantles’ empire crumbling before they do. The movie opens with a career woman, wife, and mother – Bodil “Bo” (Bracha van Doesburgh) – a judge in a family court. After a tense encounter in the courtroom, Bo goes on her merry way, amped up for a trip away from her husband and young son.

Bo does not plan to spend her mini-vacation alone, though. She and her married best friend Isabel (Elise Schaap) plan to cheat on their husbands, and this is not their first time either. “Faithfully Yours” reveals they run a sophisticated and long-running scheme wherein Bo and Isabel take turns covering each other’s digital tracks. They do this by documenting the other’s time via text messages to their husband.

It should be any other trip. Bo and Isabel have also taken steps to protect against any tracking apps. This time it is Isabel’s turn to walk on the wild side, although Bo also imbibes in her usual extracurricular activity with a man she meets. It is the last thing that goes according to plan, and before Bo knows it, her best friend is missing, and Bo is a murder suspect.

This plot sounds like an opportunity to caution viewers on the dangers of cheating like “Fatal Attraction” and many others have done. “Faithfully Yours” charts a slightly different course without extolling its lead for her choices like a certain Netflix series. While infidelity is a large part of the Netflix movie, the driving force is its mystery.

Fans of 90s thrillers (you are reading one) will more than appreciate the chance to plug their brain in and take it for a spin. “Faithfully Yours” does a good job of trying to stay ahead of viewers with one twist after another. In its attempt to be ambitiously twisted, it does get slightly tangled in its web. Those who respect thrillers will be too busy being entertained by this one for it to matter.

Solid performances by the cast ground the film from feeling too far-fetched. Plus, anyone who has watched more than one episode of “Dateline” knows that nothing is off limits when infidelity is involved. Yes, even disturbing disappearances. “Faithfully Yours” is currently streaming on Netflix alongside many suspenseful tales.

“Faithfully Yours” Viewers Will Also Like:

- “Belle de Jour” 👗 for more enigmatic betrayals 💔

- “Deep Water” 🌊 to unravel another unfaithful thriller 😬

- “The Wrath of God” 🙏 for a brilliant cat-and-mouse mystery 🙀🐭 on Netflix 🍿

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-22848231931188888012023-05-31T08:30:00.003-04:002023-10-14T11:59:28.162-04:00'You' Season 5 Storyline I Need to See Before Series Ending

Netflix

“You” Season 5 will be the series’ final season, and there is a storyline I need to see before the ending. The Netflix hit is unlikely to have time for more than one central storyline in Season 5, and this is my pitch for what I want it to be!

For one, I am rooting for Penn Badgley’s “You” wishes to be realized in Season 5. Way before the fifth season got officially confirmed as the final one, Badgley opined all about Joe Goldberg. Badgley told BuzzFeed that he was ready for Joe to confront justice, saying (via US Magazine):

“He’s among the worst. I think there needs to be a real sense of justice, not for Joe, but for us in this world that has been created. That probably means Joe will be unhappy because he’s constitutionally unhappy.”

Sounds like it is time for Joe to face the music and for Dr. Nicky to go free. Remember, Dr. Nicky is in prison for a crime he did not commit -- the Season 1 murder of Guinevere Beck. Joe should get arrested at the beginning of “You” Season 5. Let Joe be ready to give up, take accountability for everything, and accept the most severe punishment. Let’s face it, he does feel guilt.

Season 5 Storyline Pitch

Enter an ambitious public defender who believes that Joe should plead not guilty due to insanity. At first, Joe is hesitant. He has done so many awful things and is convinced it is all his doing. Like Frank Castle’s “Daredevil” Season 2 storyline, Joe is ready to give in when he gets inspired to hang in. On “Daredevil,” Frank had Karen. For “You,” let’s call her Kira. (Why not?)

If you predicted that Kira would be Joe’s new “You” in this theoretical Season 5 storyline -- you guessed correctly. In Season 5, the series would shake itself up again. This time as a courtroom drama. Who else is ready for a thirsty DA and idealistic defense attorney? If that sounds interesting, how does it all end?

Joe gets acquitted by reason of insanity.

“You” Season 5 would elapse as Joe is deemed legally sane and able to resume life. Just as Joe believes he will be healed, released, and enjoy his remaining days with Kira, something goes wrong. Joe is not Kira’s only case. As a public defender, Kira is flooded with them.

Throughout this Season 5 theoretical, breadcrumbs are dropped regarding her other client. Kira believes in them too. Unfortunately, Kira ends up as their victim. Now, Joe is free, but without Kira, the woman he became free to have by his side. Joe is consumed with rage toward Kira’s killer. And as you would expect, he acts on it.

Joe avenges Kira before disappearing into the darkness.

The series should end with a medicated Joe settling into a small rural town (think “Heartland”). A storyline that I really wish “You” had time to fully explore. But with Penn Badgley acknowledging he is ready for “You” to end, I do not see trying his patience.

In the end, Joe could walk into a diner and ask for water and something to eat. As he looks at his medicine bottle filled with his medication, a woman says she has not seen him before. Joe does not respond, staring at his pill bottle. The woman then asks what his name is.

Joe flashes through the past five seasons as the woman says, “Hello,” in a faded echo. Finally, the audio becomes clear again, and she persistently inquires, “Hey. Who are you?”. While the meds have dulled him down at this point, a twinkle of life returns to Joe’s eyes.

As Joe readies to answer her question, the screen cuts to black.

This ending would leave viewers to wonder if Joe is truly turning over a new leaf or an old one, and it would bring us full circle with the TV series’s title. This opens the door for “You” to be revisited, possibly with a “History of Violence” twist. The storyline with the lawyer would also give “You” a chance to explore Joe’s mental health and insanity as a legal defense.

For those who follow true crime, you must know how relevant taking on this subject matter is. It is past time for “You” to confront its true crime connections and reckon with some of the biggest questions facing it. There could be a podcaster wanting to interview Joe, the mainstream media giving its spin, and tons of YouTube videos on the case.

There is a lot left for “You” to cover. Hopefully, they leave the door open to revisit where it could all go in the final season.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-74593508807003654642023-05-26T08:30:00.080-04:002023-10-14T11:59:39.231-04:00Why Is 'Obsession' Still Not One Of Netflix's Subscribers?

Ana Blumenkron / Netflix

If you are looking for a short, steamy binge, Netflix has you covered with “Obsession.” This Richard Armitage starrer has everything TV and movie fans should be dying for, as much as they were back in 2020. That is when a certain Sarah Shahi starrer arrived on Netflix as an audacious hit.

Cut to 2023. The seductive miniseries “Obsession” spins a haunting web of narcissism, lust, and betrayal that will blow your mind. Not since Naomi Watts’s “Adore” has such intense narcissism gone on display.

So, what is this Netflix original about?

“Obsession” revolves around the Farrows, a distinguished family living their best lives when son Jay (Rish Shaw) introduces his girlfriend, Anna (Charlie Murphy). Jay’s mother, Ingrid (Indira Varma), rightfully picks up a bad vibe from Anna, whose surface charm is self-evident. William, Jay’s father, has a very different perspective.

The top-flight surgeon is enthralled and enamored by Anna at first sight. Anna becomes his “Obsession.” William and Anna barely dance around their chemistry before giving into it -- full tilt. Despite knowing how his actions would crush his son, William devours the opportunity to be with Anna in a strange arrangement that defies common sense.

For this pair of lovers, they are all that exist. They are all that matter. Many might find this plot point melodramatic or over-the-top. Take it from this viewer. It is no work of fiction. There are people this single-mindedly obsessed with another person that for them, only they matter.

Is it “Obsession” or possession?

Richard Armitage plays William as a man plagued by addiction, willing to go to any lengths for his “fix” of Anna. The sight of her causes him to lose all clarity. His loving and devoted wife? He does not value her anymore (if he ever did). His loyal and caring son? Charlie Murphy and Indira Varma are both compelling as the women in William’s life. Varma especially lands some harrowing blows.

What happens when all of this “Obsession” comes to a head?

It is a dizzying ride down the drain, as any adult thriller worth its salt should be, and “Obsession” is a prime example of how to nail the genre. One such entry should contain moments of human frailty, ambition, and desperation. There are scenes of crazily-set “encounters,” big emotions, and clever writing.

Watched as a two-and-a-half-hour movie or split up into nightly episodes, “Obsession” could become yours. Is it worth watching? It is the Spanish series’ final season, and with the long-searched-for answers on the tip of its tongue, I could not help to binge it. In a slightly shaved-down outing, Season 3 comprises six episodes that do not exactly breeze by, although they do feel focused.

Much to Paul’s chagrin, the renewed focus of Season 3 centers on “The Boarding School: Las Cumbres,” taking Amaia (Asia Ortega) out of play. The headstrong heroine becomes the “new Manu” when she mysteriously disappears from the grounds of the dreadful school. Paul (Albert Salazar) and his best friend turned frenemy Manu (Carlos Alcaide) are soon joining forces with new girl Zoe (Lydia Pavon) to find Amaia.

Related: Does Amazon’s “Dead Ringers” Breathe Life into 1988 Movie?

Other subplots include the mortal immortals -- Ines and Leon. Oh, and Paul’s sister, Adele (Daniela Rubio), continues to use people and be selfish. It all makes for a much more streamlined season than it sounds like. “The Boarding School: Las Cumbres” spends less time on the students’ suffering and more on their scheming.

Zoe is a welcome breath of non-whiny air, and her portrayer, Lydia Pavon, more than holds her own with the show’s established stars. “The Boarding School: Las Cumbres” manages to reinvent itself enough to keep from going stale without changing the game enough to be unrecognizable. In many ways, Zoe is the missing piece of the student ensemble. She brings much-needed levity and zest to it.

So, is it worth watching “The Boarding School: Las Cumbres” Season 3?

Yes. It concludes the story much more fun and excitingly than the slow build suggested. Season 3 cuts through the noise with a streamlined cast and fewer subplots. The major problem with “The Boarding School: Las Cumbres” is that it is filmed way too darkly. Not since the final season of “Game of Thrones” has a TV series basked in such darkness.

On the bright side (pun most definitely intended), “The Boarding School: Las Cumbres” does deliver on providing closure on its numerous plot threads. All a fan can ask for in a final season is giving the characters as happy of an ending as a show can honestly allow. The series is now streaming in its entirety on Prime Video.

Fans of “The Boarding School: Las Cumbres”

Will Also Like:

“Gran Hotel” for the best Spanish-language mystery series ever (and that is saying something)

“Absentia” for more mystery and malevolent mayhem on Prime Video

“The Silencing” for another topsy, turvy mystery with big twists

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-577221778912689332023-05-19T17:12:00.010-04:002023-10-13T09:38:47.624-04:00Is Netflix's 'The Tailor' Starring Çağatay Ulusoy Must-See TV?

Netflix

I have a confession to make -- I cannot stop thinking about “The Tailor” (“Terzi”) on Netflix. Fans are currently waiting for Season 2, and the gap is brutal. The uber-dramatic TV series starring Çağatay Ulusoy as the best-dressed character since Chuck Bass is everything you could want in a drama. It takes a second to get going as Season 1 shores up its sea legs with some intricate plotting.

Once it leaves shore, “The Tailor” sails in waters as smooth as silk draped around one of Peyami’s creations. Set in modern-day Istanbul, the Netflix series follows Peyami Dokumacı (Çağatay Ulusoy, “The Protector”), a highly successful fashion designer and the eponymous “tailor.” Much like his designs obscure and accentuate the body, so is Peyami’s carefully crafted life.

All of Peyami’s best-laid plans begin to unravel after the sudden death of his beloved grandfather. Hidden away from the glitz and glamor of Istanbul is Peyami’s family and, most importantly, his father with special needs, Mustafa (Olgun Şimşek). Left without a caregiver, Mustafa, and the rest of Peyami’s family, including his Machiavellian grandma and the family’s entourage, move to Istanbul and into his mansion.

It is a lot in very little time.

As if Peyami does not have enough going on, his best friend Dimitri (a terrific Salih Bademci) is getting married, and Peyami is handling the wedding dress. What no one can predict is that Dimitri’s bride is about to collide with Peyami in more ways than any viewer could imagine. “The Tailor” twists and turns on this and many other complex layers.

At no point does the Turkish series bite off more than it can chew. It savors every morsel of the story as pensively as Peyami considers where to cut an inch of fabric. Much like a fine design, it is only when you step back that you can truly appreciate it for all it is. After devouring Season 1 of “The Tailor,” my and my family’s appetite for Season 2 has only grown.

Making us wait a while, “The Tailor” Season 2 is set to premiere Friday, July 28, on Netflix. Thankfully, Season 1 ends with a risky cliffhanger that will not leave viewers hanging indefinitely. It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here. The cast is excellent, and Çağatay Ulusoy is well-suited to the central role.

Peyami is an enigma that Ulusoy does a good job of containing with enough emotional undercurrent to remind viewers the heart behind Peyami’s story remains largely unseen. Unlike other series, “The Tailor” Season 1 gets better (not worse) as more information is revealed. You can watch the trailer for Season 2 below (spoiler alert):

Who else is ready to see where “The Tailor” goes in Season 2? Are lots of hands raised? I knew it! “The Tailor” gradually gains momentum in every Season 1 episode, and it is impossible not to get caught in its grip. Few shows can manage that feat, and this Netflix series is perfectly tailored to get it.

Season 1 of “The Tailor” is currently streaming on Netflix alongside a ton of other great movies and TV shows.

Fans of (“The Tailor”) Will Also Like:

“The Royal Tailor” 📏 for more love triangles and high-stakes tailoring 💘

“Sadace Sen” 💘 for romance that stands in the face of great odds 😊

“Chokehold” 🔍 for a briefer dose of Turkish drama 🎬

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-37054445084109202802023-05-03T08:00:00.008-04:002024-01-19T23:45:16.651-05:00Does Prime's 'Dead Ringers' Breathe Life into 1988 Movie?

Courtesy of Prime (L) / 20th Century Fox (R)

This spoiler-free review of “Dead Ringers” on Amazon Prime Video is based on watching the first and final episode of the TV series, and the 1988 movie “Dead Ringers.”

“Dead Ringers” is back with a vengeance in Amazon’s television adaptation of the edgy 1988 movie of the same name. Switching out Jeremy Irons for Rachel Weisz, the 2023 drama created by Alice Birch uses its source material as a jumping-off point to dig ever deeper into a troubling tale. That would be the psychological entanglement of symbiotic entities who do not know life apart from one another.

To the world, they are known as twins. For the mythos of “Dead Ringers,” their being so means much more than that. Beverly and Elliot Mantle (Rachel Weisz) are twin sisters and OBGYNs, who share every aspect of their lives. No portion of their existence is off limits. As with anything - moderation is the key to striking a healthy balance.

The Mantle sisters fail or refuse to grasp this concept.

Unlike its movie counterpart, Amazon’s “Dead Ringers” are obstetricians, which provides a topical branch for the series to explore, criticize, and speculate about fixing. In the first episode, the TV show plunges head-first into a host of hot-button issues facing the world of obstetrics. What detracts from the discussion is the way the Mantle sisters are presented. (More on that in a minute.)

As “Dead Ringers” progresses throughout its first episode, Beverly and Elliot insist they want to change how women give birth. They (correctly) see how the healthcare system is failing people. Enter a deliciously foreboding Jennifer Ehle as anti-philanthropist Rebecca Parker. Along with desiring a dramatic overhaul in patient care, Elliot wants to change even more. At the top of that list is Elliot successfully getting Beverly pregnant with a baby she can carry to term.

It feels like a realistic, not lofty goal. In the real world, grandmothers have given birth to their grandchildren. Hence, many advancements still feel like they are on the table. While Elliot wants science to catch up with her ambitions, Beverly wants to help patients’ birthing experience. Elliot is pragmatic, Beverly is idealistic, and they should be the perfect team.

If only something were not churning beneath the surface.

They dress and speak poshly, yet obnoxiously eat in front of people. They consume whatever is in front of them with their mouths wide open, acting as if they are dying of hunger. There is also the matter of inscrutable screaming in the bathroom. This scene recalls one critically acclaimed movie’s most puzzling and ridiculous scenes wherein Amy Adams’ character yelled on the toilet in “American Hustle.” (Yikes.)

I get it. “Dead Ringers” wants to be edgy. Characters obnoxiously eating with their mouths full, bizarre screaming, and focusing on the crudely banal is not how you go about it. There is also the heaviness of the cinematography with its oppressive choice of dark, sterile, and ominous hues. Oh, and the atmosphere is heavy with the sense of ever-escalating madness.

Ultimately, the Amazon miniseries feels as crowded and claustrophobic as the space in a past-due womb. Rachel Weisz successfully plays her dual role to the hilt. Weisz approaches each scene with the confident, tender footing of a lioness circling her meal. Her eyes glimmer with the keen sense that she is about to devour something epic. It is only a matter of sinking her teeth into it.

Still, it is impossible not to compare the Amazon series to director David Cronenberg’s standout 1988 movie.

There is tender nuance to Jeremy Irons’ performances as Beverly and Elliot in the psychological thriller. Without him needing to say a word, it is clear which twin Irons is playing in every scene. It helps that they are written as similar but distinctive. In the new “Dead Ringers,” Rachel Weisz’s twins are indistinguishable except for their differing hairstyle choices.

The number one issue with “Dead Ringers” is not too much “twinning.” It is dark, impenetrably gloomy, and sterile at the same time. In the first episode, it is up to standout Britne Oldford to change that. Oldford’s turn as Genevieve is textured, layered with empathy and an ethereal warmth. She also has terrific chemistry with Rachel Weisz, making their ensuing relationship entirely believable.

No one who values their emotional well-being, including Genevieve, should get involved with this drowning duo. If my emotional health can withstand its gloom and doom, this Amazon Prime subscriber may revisit the series. For now, I will settle upon finishing my research into the real twins that inspired “Dead Ringers.” Stay tuned.

“Dead Ringers” 2023 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The original 1988 “Dead Ringers” movie is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max (where I watched it), Hulu, and for free on Tubi.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-84216031637834437332023-05-01T08:00:00.010-04:002023-10-14T12:00:04.485-04:00Is Netflix's 'Chokehold' a Riddle, a Rhyme, Or Sign of the Times?

Netflix

In “Chokehold” (“Boga Boga”), a man in hiding decides to move to the worst place possible to wait out an ongoing trial his plea deal hinges upon. As the Turkish Netflix movie begins, Yalin (a dynamically brooding Kivanç Tatlitug) is barely surviving a financial scandal of his own making. He stole from clients who invested, believing they would hit it rich. They ended up the exact opposite.

Yalin seems oblivious to how angry those he stole from are at him. Instead of staying inside his palatial house, which looks like an Olive Garden, he regularly moves about the village. He takes little time to run into a particularly livid former investor. Things turn physical and violent. If Yalin thought he was looking over his shoulder before this incident, his neck gets more exercise afterward.

From this point forward, “Chokehold” toys with a sense of reality almost too surreal to be believable. Are we watching a man’s mental facilities fail him? Is any of this real? Or are we watching Yalin’s tortured allegorical nightmares? It is tough to know. Director Onur Saylak (“Hatirla Gönül”) sets the film at a slow, contemplative pace, allowing every scene to be savored.

“Chokehold” can be a trying experience for someone with limited patience. Hakan Gunday’s script comprises sparse dialogue and gradual character development. Yalin seems to learn nothing from each village encounter to the next. It is only with the film’s potentially divisive ending that the final puzzle piece seems to fall into place. With it, a powerful message is sent as it descends.

Unlike many, “Chokehold” does not play sides with its characters. It plays the story from several angles, leaning into each with unnerving uncertainty. The context surrounding the village and everyone in it changes with every scene. Yalin’s long-suffering wife, Beyza (a fantastic Funda Eryigit), centers the piece. Thanks to Beyza and the beauty of Turkey, the audience remains transfixed.

“Chokehold” is a riddle with a rhyme and reason to it that ominously calls upon the signs and headlines of the times.

Fans of (“Chokehold”) Will Like This:

“Black Money Love” for the twists

“Who Were We Running From?” for Netflix intrigue

“Noise” for a slow-burning mystery

“Chokehold” (“Boga Boga”) is currently streaming on Netflix alongside a slew of other terrific Turkish series and movies.

Britt Lawrencehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06683050037765225503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4138656198355771818.post-45876910057346606532023-04-26T13:38:00.013-04:002023-10-14T12:00:12.764-04:00'Mystery 101' Cancelled: Jill Wagner and Kristoffer Polaha React

Hallmark Media / ©2019 Crown Media United States LLC

It is sad and true - “Mystery 101” has gotten cancelled by Hallmark. While Hallmark’s decision means the end of Jill Wagner and Kristoffer Polaha sharing the screen as Amy and Travis, hopefully, we have not seen the last of them sharing the screen. Hallmark Christmas movie, anyone? For his part, Kristoffer Polaha also kept things classy, writing this message on Twitter:

Well kids, looks like the cat’s out of the bag. #Mystery101 has solved its last mystery.

You are the most incredibly supportive fans ever! Joining Jill Wagner and Kristoffer Polaha in reacting to the news of “Mystery 101” getting cancelled was Robin Thomas, who played Amy’s novelist dad – Graham. (Man, it hurts to type that in the past tense.) Taking to Twitter like Polaha, Robin Thomas

(Why Hallmark?! Why did you have to do this? 😭) The shock remains especially vivid as Hallmark Movies & Mysteries has appeared to be reinvesting in the “mysteries” portion of its cable title. There have been recent original movies in the investigative vein replete with the odd couple pairings that have worked so well.

That said, the cancellation news has been looming. The last “Mystery 101” episode aired back in August 2021. “Deadly History” ended with a huge cliffhanger that teased the end of Amy and Travis’ relationship despite their romance hitting new heights earlier in the same movie. “Mystery 101” fans are left to take Jill Wagner’s lead in imagining Amy and Travis happily married watching sunsets in Fiji.

I’m not crying. You’re crying. Thankfully, Jill Wagner braced fans for this cancellation outcome, so it did not come completely out of the blue. If you follow her on Instagram (I do!), then you know she has tried to keep “Mystery 101” fans in the loop. In April 2022, Jill Wagner posted a video explaining the status of “Mystery 101.”

In it, Wagner made it clear the ball was in Hallmark’s court as she wanted to continue the movie series. In June 2022, Eclectic Pop also reached out to a Crown Media rep, who shared that there was no update at that time. Like Wagner, Kristoffer Polaha also kept fans appraised of the movie series’s status.

In a since-deleted post celebrating 2022’s arrival, Polaha responded to a fan, saying that “they” were planning to make another “Mystery 101” in 2022. Sadly, those plans never came to fruition. Leading “Mystery 101” fans to wonder: what changed between January 2022 and mid-April 2022? Why has Hallmark decided to break ties with one of its fan-favorite movie series when it is investing in starting new ones?

Why can we not have “Curious Caterer” and more “Mystery 101,” particularly when it ends in a way that makes it tough to binge? After all, people like endings. At least, Hallmark’s announcement brings an (unhappy) end to the agonizing, nearly two-year wait for fans waiting to learn the fate of yet another beloved mystery series.

Tragically, it also brings an end to any hope Amy and Travis’ story will get a proper conclusion. What do you think about this news, “Mystery 101” fans? What do you think happened between Amy and Travis after “Mystery 101: Deadly History”? Did they get their happy ending?
