Song of the Day: 'Most People' by Dawes

First heard this song recently when I had the splendor of seeing Dawes in concert when they opened for Bob Dylan on his tour and they were unbelievable. They had a really dynamic sound and played great live, so if you get the chance to see them, please do.

They had a fantastic stage presence and they’re unique sound kept you hanging on every beat. The song that really stood out during their set was “Most People” from their latest album “Stories Don’t End”.

The instrumentation and wistful lyrics were perfectly crafted to complement each other. It is one of those rare songs where I actually identified with the female protagonist because she was an average girl. As most songs center on the description of a woman’s physicality and as an otherworldly zenith of womanhood that fills the fantasies of guy-dom, this song describes an ordinary woman with a simple request for the world.

The thing that sets this song apart is that the male narrator is actually listening to the woman in his life. He has not only listened, he feels it is important enough to share what she has expressed to others.

As someone who has lamented this woman’s plight more than once, it was nice to hear it echoed back and be assured by the narrator that those who feel like her are not alone. Perhaps the thing that stands out so much in this song is this isn’t a typical love song dealing with a couple and their feelings for one another.

The narrator doesn’t go into great detail about his feelings towards her or define their relationship, it’s more of a collection of observations that he has made studying her and falling for her. It’s more of a reflection of someone who has been listening to his best friend and the relationship that grows from that kind of foundation, a deep affection.

As the song goes  ‘And she thinks "most people don't talk enough about how lucky they are/Most people don't know what it takes for me to get through the day/Most people don't talk enough about the love in their hearts"/But she doesn't know most people feel that same way’. If you listen to this song, hopefully you and “most people” will be equally as taken with it.

I want to hear from you. So if you have a comment you would like to make about this song or the song of the day, in general, just leave a comment below!
