Movie Review: 'The Light Between Oceans' (2016)

The Light Between Oceans - Movie Poster, Review
Director Derek Cianfrance’s morose, and restrained adaptation of M.L. Stedman’s novel of the same name, can count several major accomplishments to its credit. It is thought-provoking, emotionally stirring, and filled with terrific performances by its cast. On the other hand, it is unevenly paced, starkly scored, frustratingly sound edited, and at times, over-directed.

Retro Movie Review: 'Beauty and the Beast' (2014)

There are no musical numbers, or enchanted teapots, to be found in this French-German adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast.” What you will find instead, is the classic story retold in a way that builds on Disney’s treasured version of the beloved fairy tale. When one of the women’s sons is accused of choking, one of his female classmates during their first-grade orientation, a feud between the trio, and the girl’s mother begins.

Movie Review: 'Love & Friendship' (2016)

Kate Beckinsale’s feisty performance is the valiant highlight of this tepid costume drama. “Love & Friendship” is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novella “Lady Susan.” In this chatty adaptation by director Whit Stillman, the vivacious Kate Beckinsale stars as the eponymous lead. A ruthless widow, and cunning social climber, who schemes up a marriage for herself, and her mild-mannered daughter, a task that is easier said than done.
