Top 10 Most-Read Movie Reviews of 2016

Another year has come and gone on Eclectic Pop. Now it is time to reflect on 2016. First up, let us take a look back at the Top 10 most-read movie reviews. When it came to the most popular movie reviews, the immediate trend that sticks out is that there really isn’t one.

From superhero flicks, to comedies and romance, a little dash of everything made into onto the Top 10. One could safely say this list is “eclectic.” There are three costume dramas, two superhero movies, one comedy, one horror/comedy, a dramedy and two thrillers, to be exact.

When it came to negative versus positive reviews, readers tended to trend towards the moderate. Only two of the reviews, were intensely positive (“Far from the Madding Crowd” and “Testament of Youth”). While only one can be regarded as overtly negative (“The Final Girls”). The rest were more upbeat, critical yet leaning towards being agreeable.

Of the movie reviews that did not make the list, there was tough competition between “The Boss” and the comically-inclined sports biopic, “Eddie the Eagle” for the #10 spot. The Melissa McCarthy starrer barely clawed its way past the competition.

French-language films “Rabid Dogs” and “The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun” placed #12 and #13, respectively. A French film did make its way on to the Top 10, in the form of the thriller, “Disorder.”

Curiously absent from the Top 10 were Oscar contenders “Sicario” and “Brooklyn.” Both made it into the Top 15.

To be perfectly frank, there were not a lot of movies to be excited about in 2016. As a huge fan of the 2015 films, “Far from the Madding Crowd” and “Testament of Youth,” it is an absolute delight to see them in the Top 5. Both films share a lot in common, so it is a sweet touch to see them back-to-back on the list. As two of the best films of 2015, their finishes are well deserved.
