Fall's Best New TV Bets: ABC

How to Get Away with Murder | From Shonda Rhimes, the creator behind ABC mega-hits “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” comes this legal drama and procedural. Oscar nominee Viola Davis stars as a law professor who gets tangled up in a murder plot along with her students. Little else is known about the plot so viewers are in for a few surprises when it premieres. The college campus is a surprisingly rare setting on television and an underused creative possibility.

When it airs “How to…” will make Wednesdays a full night of programming from Rhimes, closing out the line-up. ABC has been trying to get a legal drama going for several seasons and this looks a lot more promising than 2010’s defunct “The Deep End”. Premieres: Sept. 25 & Airs Wednesdays @10pm EST

Selfie | This half-hour single camera sitcom is a modern day version of “My Fair Lady”. John Cho stars as Henry Higenbottam, a marketing guru and mentor to the fame obsessed Eliza Dooley (Karen Gillan) who believes social media is the key to becoming a superstar. “Selfie” appears to be a sharp commentary on the current culture’s fixation on the self-consuming antics of those on the web and that is certainly a hot button issue in the public forum.

While it sounds like a heavily constrained premise, John Cho should prove a definitive highlight. He has major potential as a lead and his chemistry with Gillan could prove a promising mix of humor and possible romance. Premieres: Sept. 30 & Airs Tuesdays @8pm EST
Forever | New York medical examiner Dr. Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd) is at the top of his field and along with solving the city’s latest crimes, he is also trying to uncover the mystery of his immortality. Having lived through many centuries, his gift has given him heightened skills that have aided him with his job.

With a new partner in the fray, perhaps his love interest (?) and his best friend as the sole keeper of his secret, Henry’s life is ripe for television. For the most part it sounds like a procedural with a catchy hook, similar to ABC’s current hit “Castle”. Creating a supernatural/crime procedural hybrid isn’t just on ABC’s agenda, NBC is pinning their hopes on “Constantine”. Premieres: Sept. 23 & Airs Tuesdays @10pm EST
Best Returning Bet: Dancing with the Stars | The veteran series welcomes Julianne Hough back to the ballroom on a long-term basis as a fourth judge. As exciting as it to have her back (hopefully she’ll be involved in some of the pro performances) there is a history of four judges being one too many on talent shows (i.e. “American Idol”) so it will be interesting to see how that works out. Personally, the greatest source of anticipation is seeing the inevitable contemporary dance to Sam Smith’s smash “Stay with Me”. Returns: Sept. 15
